Can be enhanced with exiscan-acl, where it can scan emails for broken MIME encoding, unwanted file attachments and pass emails through a virus scanner and/or SpamAssassin.
i would strongly recommend e-smith SME server. only 300 Mb ISO, very easy to setup and configure. virtually all settings are done via web page from another computer. also makes a great internet router, firewall, dhcp server etc, etc. all automatically setup from the install. very light weight.
we have it running on machines starting at P133 w/ 32 Mb upwards.
runs great and easy to add modules, configure etc.
get it from http://www.e-smith.org/content/downloads/
if you want, email me at pc_doc@writeme.com and i can give u a copy of the latest version with a lot of modules that we use.
yep, the kernel IS behind the rest by a little bit, but they released the upgrade patches (currently on 4) for v5.6 about two days after the sendmail problem.
in that regard i think it keeps itself relatively secure. only drawback i have seen is the firewall protection could be better, and you can only add users via the web page. if you add them from command line, u get problems with integration.
on the plus side, really easy to modify and customize using e-smiths template system
Mail servers - try Exim
Have a look at Exim - http://www.exim.org
